Esomeprazole Sodium Injection
Esomeprazole is related to the group of medication called Proton pump inhibitors, which reduces acid formation in your stomach. It is prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (overproduction of acid because of a pancreatic tumour).
Esomeprazole lowers gastric acid by preventing the activity of an enzyme (H+/K+ ATPase or gastric proton pump). Found in the cells of the stomach wall that produce gastric acid secretion, damaging to the food pipe, stomach, and duodenum, this proton pump helps to maintain its homeostasis. By stopping the formation of stomach acid, esomeprazole removes symptoms of food pipe lining inflammation (esophagitis), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or heartburn.
Benefits:
- Esomeprazole is useful in treating erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the food tube), symptom relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
- Esomeprazole acts by blocking the proton pump gate (which produces stomach acid) irreversibly.
- It can be prescribed to all age groups and even to special populations such as the elderly, pregnant and lactating mothers, kidney and liver disease.
Uses:
- Esomeprazole is beneficial for removing GERD symptoms like heartburn and acid regurgitation by lowering the formation of stomach acid.
- Esomeprazole is usually used to enhance the healing of inflamed esophagus tissue resulting from extended exposure to stomach acid.
- Esomeprazole is employed in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, an ailment that causes excessive secretion of stomach acid.
- Esomeprazole prevents the formation of peptic ulcers, especially in patients who receive long-term NSAID therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Q. When is the optimal time to take Esomeprazole?
Normally, Esomeprazole is taken once daily in the morning. If it is taken twice daily, take a dose in the morning and a dose at night. The tablets must be swallowed whole (do not forget not to chew or crush them) and should be taken at least 1 hour before meals with some water.
Q. Should I discontinue taking Esomeprazole since I feel better?
Stopping Esomeprazole suddenly can result in more acid production and thus increase your symptoms if you have been taking it for a while. You therefore need to talk about any dosage adjustments or whether you want to discontinue Esomeprazole.
